Serving Through the Storm was founded by us 5 years ago, when God laid on our heart to help those going through the early stages of a devastating medical diagnosis. How we have an idea of how to deal with that is because of our story. 11 years ago Stuart was diagnosed with ALS and life as we knew it was over. Our dreams for our future were crushed and in our minds according to what is known with the lifespan of someone diagnosed, we had every reason to believe that he would die within 3 to 5 years. 2 years later, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's stage 3 Lymphoma, and 4 years after that, it became active again and I underwent a bone marrow transplant. Unless you have been there, it is hard to understand the sucker punch that you have been dealt.
That first summer I processed at the place that became my refuge, the rock at Scarborough Beach in Rhode Island, a two hour drive where I spend the day fasting, praying, crying, watching the waves crash against the rock which stood strong. Tho my world was seemingly falling apart, God met me there and gave me the strength to return home and encourage Stuart.
46 years ago we had purchased land a 1/4 mile up the road from the beach and our hope was to raise our children there. Well, that never happened, so our plan was to build a retirement house. When Stu was diagnosed we were going to sell it. Fast forward 11 years, and Stuart is still here, dealing with the mobility issues (yes), but his diagnosis has been changed to the non-life threatening PLS. I am now 5 years cancer free with no fear of the Lymphoma returning. So, now we know that God has a greater purpose for US and for that land. And having survived what others have not, some very dear friends diagnosed the same time as us, we know that we KNOW... we have no time to waste.
The dream of El Bethel was planted in our hearts after much prayer when we dedicated that land for Him to use for His service. El Bethel will be a place where those who are newly diagnosed can come and spend a few days (for no charge) to have a place to process at the shore like I did, because all answers can be found at the beach!!
We are now in awe of how far we have come. House is built and it is amazing. We are ready to host!!! In order for us to love on our guests we would love if you join us in prayer, support through your purchases in Celestial Glo, or a gift. (We are not a 501c3 so your gift is not tax deductible). You can also love on guests by purchasing a gift welcome basket (see link in site).
We thank you in advance for your love, support, and prayers!!
Blessings,
Celeste and Stuart
